Groundbreaking ceremony for world scale cumene plant in Marl, Germany

INEOS Phenol gives the kick-off for construction work on October 1st, 2019

Chemieanlagenbau Chemnitz GmbH (CAC) is building a world scale cumene plant for INEOS Phenol in the Evonik Chemical Park Marl, Germany. For CAC, this project is the largest EPC services contract since CAC was founded 55 years ago. The capacity of the new plant is rated for 750,000 tonnes of cumene per year. The unit making use of existing pipeline connections between INEOS Phenol phenol and acetone production in Gladbeck, the Evonik Chemical Park Marl and the BP refinery and cracker complex in Gelsenkirchen. The construction of the plant will secure the supply of raw materials to the plants in Gladbeck and Antwerp for the coming decades. Commissioning is planned for the 3rd quarter 2021.

With the planning and construction of a reactor weighing approximately 300 tonnes and several distillation columns, it becomes a representative reference project for the CAC division of classical petrochemicals. "We are very pleased to implement this strategically important major project for INEOS Phenol" explains Mike Niederstadt, COO of CAC.

INEOS Group

INEOS Phenol is a part of INEOS Group and, according to its own figures, the world's largest producer of phenol, acetone and cumene. Cumene serves as an intermediate product for the production of phenol and acetone at INEOS Phenol’s plant in Gladbeck. From 1954 the capacity there has increased 80-fold, from an initial 8,000 tonnes to 650,000 tonnes per year.

With this new plant, INEOS Phenol secures its own cumene source for the future. Thus it is a valuable and strategic investment for the future of INEOS Phenol and the Chemical Park Marl.
